Colonoscopy: A Worthwhile, Life-Saving Procedure

People don’t like to talk about colonoscopies. It makes us uncomfortable. Yet, this important and potentially life-saving screening is far from the unpleasant experience it once was.

Why Your GP Might Recommend a Colonoscopy

Your GP may refer you for a colonoscopy for several reasons. It is the best method for early detection and diagnosis of gastrointestinal conditions, including colorectal cancer. It also helps investigate abdominal pain, blood in the stool, diarrhoea, or changes in bowel habits.

The Modern Colonoscopy Suite

Dr. Du Plessis says about the procedure: “Times have changed. Specialists now commonly perform the modern colonoscopy in their rooms. You don’t need hospital admittance. A specialist anaesthetist ensures effective sedation without discomfort. The surgeon focuses on the colonoscopy.”

Simplified Preparation

Many people think they must drink a huge amount of liquid before a colonoscopy. However, preparations have changed. “Previously, patients drank four litres of preparation. Now, it’s only three glasses (750 millilitres). Patients still drink two to three litres of water, but the preparation volume is much less. Patients tolerate it better. Before, they struggled and experienced nausea. That doesn’t happen anymore.”

Cost-Effective and Convenient

Dr. Du Plessis explains that medical aids in South Africa process a colonoscopy under the in-hospital benefit, even in doctor’s rooms. “While there’s often a co-payment, having it done in the rooms is cost-effective and has positives. It’s more private and personal. You avoid contact with other patients. This relaxes people anxious about hospitals. In the rooms, we speak to patients directly after the procedure. We have a conversation and look at photos together, if they wish. We discuss issues and treatment.”

Minimal Sedation and Quick Recovery

He says the sedation isn’t heavy. “You’re under sedation for 45 minutes and awake within five to ten minutes. Like any sedation, don’t drive until 12 hours after the procedure.”

Early Detection and Prevention

A colonoscopy detects and treats pre-cancerous polyps or anomalies. This is preferable to waiting for symptoms. Anyone over 40 should have a screening colonoscopy. Those with a family history of colon cancer need more frequent testing from a younger age.
