Colon Cancer Awareness Month | CCFM Interview with Dr Maré du Plessis

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month – an important reminder that early detection saves lives.

In a recent interview on CCFM, Dr Maré du Plessis, specialist general surgeon at Mediclinic Milnerton, shared why colonoscopy remains the gold standard for detecting colorectal cancer early – often before any symptoms appear. He highlights a persistent challenge: many patients still wait until warning signs such as blood in the stool, abdominal pain, or changes in bowel habits emerge, when proactive screening could prevent cancer from developing altogether.

“A colonoscopy is not just diagnostic – it’s preventative,” explains Dr du Plessis. “If we identify precancerous polyps during screening, we can remove them immediately, effectively stopping cancer before it starts.”

In the interview, he also addresses common misconceptions around the procedure, reassuring patients that colonoscopies are safe, routine, and performed under sedation – with minimal discomfort and rapid recovery.

For individuals over 45, or those with a family history of colorectal conditions, screening is strongly recommended. However, younger patients with concerning symptoms or unexplained iron deficiency should also seek medical advice.
